Locksmith Scams: Be on Alert!!!

Locksmith Scams are making way in to prime news very often and so its necessary that we too be prepared for what all is happening around us.  According to NewsChannel 3 investigation this week, in Virginia, they have tried exposing the practices of locksmiths listed in phone books.

They found that when you call the local number,they all connect to an out of state call center. Also the address listed in the yellow pages do not add up right. Finally , the person sent out to fix your lock, is a crock, who ends up charging you much more than what was agreed. Also most of these crocks do not have a valid license, and  when you ask them for the license, they end up telling you that it is left back in the car.

According to Lisa McGee of the VCJS, “Most of the complaints they were getting where about unlicensed and unregistered activity”. Virginia’s Department of Criminal Justice Service, in charge of monitoring the industry, is estimating that one out of every four companies statewide is operating illegally.

NewChannel 3 also said that , Yellow pages  is concerned about these scams and promises to do whatever they can to address it. As a part of promise they also promise to  make compensation of as much as $500 to anyone scammed by a locksmith who advertises in the yellow pages.

So the lesson to be learned from this is, in-spite that this has happened in Virgina, we might also be vulnerable. One way to put a stop to these kind of scams is to use caution and always ask for the ID’s and licenses before you go ahead with any services.
