Locksmiths in Los Angeles are buzzing about the announcement of a breakthrough in lock technology: the world’s first self-codeable automotive-grade padlock system.
Strattec Security Corporation, a leading manufacturer of automotive locks for Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler vehicles, is introducing a real game changer with the roll out of its BOLT (Breakthrough One-key Locking Technology) line of smart locks. What makes Strattec’s new system so remarkable is that the locks are designed to open with any car key. You read that right. They actually “learn” your vehicle’s key on first insertion and then the lock is permanently programmed to open with that key. From the standpoint of anyone working as an automotive locksmith, the technology is especially impressive because an infinite number of BOLT locks can be set to open with the same vehicle key thus eliminating the need for carrying excess padlock keys or memorizing combinations.
BOLT locks are ideal for anyone who is tired of carrying and losing the keys to multiple padlocks.
In an interview with BizTimes, Mike Long, director of new market development for Strattec, descibed the thinking behind the development of the BOLT series of locks,
“We did some research and it showed that nearly half of adult car owners use a padlock for something in their life. That really motivated us to come up with a lock that would make the lives of our consumers more convenient.”
“Strattec holds the patent on the automotive-grade cylinder, and the mechanical technology associated with the one-key locking technology, Long said. “We are going for automotive- grade convenience with this series. We have already gotten a lot of positive feedback from consumers who would be interested in purchasing the product once it is released.”
The team at Fidelity Locksmith predicts Strattec’s BOLT locks are going to be a major hit. Thanks to a patented six-plate cylinder design, these locks are nearly impossible to pick or bump. The BOLT lock series features a soft casing to prevent scratching and an automotive-like shutter built into the lock to keep out moisture. In addition to a padlock, the BOLT lock series includes 5/8-inch and ½-inch receiver locks, a cable lock, a spare tire lock and a motorcycle-wheel lock. Prices start at $20.00.
