Locksmiths in Los Angeles can’t help but scratch their heads and wonder about the bad luck (some would say intelligence) of stars like Megan Fox and Paris Hilton. A recent news story in People reported that the teenage gang allegedly behind the rash of burglaries at the homes of celebrities living in the Hollywood Hills had little trouble gaining access to many of the stars’ residences. The reason? The doors were left unlocked by the celebrities. Residential locksmiths will tell you, the best lock in the world protects you only when you take the time to secure it. This total breakdown in the most fundamental rule of home security resulted in the loss of $3 million in jewelry, clothes and other luxury goods.
The stars’ security was lax in other ways. For example, authorities familiar with the case say the suspects were able to break into Lindsay Lohan’s residence by using the most primitive of burglary methods: prying open a window using a screwdriver. Any locksmith worth his or her salt would immediately ask, “What happened to Lindsay’s burglar alarm?” Either she didn’t have one or nobody bothered to arm it before leaving for the evening. Paparazzi and the stars’ publicity machines also contributed to the ease with which the “Bling Ring” entered the stars’ homes. The suspects allegedly used basic internet research to to figure out when their victims — a veritable constellation of young Hollywood talent that included Rachel Bilson of “The O.C.”, Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” fame and Audrina Patridge of “The Hills”— would be attending premieres and other events and so would not be home. The break-ins were further facilitated by one celebrity website which provided the stars’ addresses and detailed aerial photos of their properties
You’d be surprised at how many people, both stars and regular folks – but not professional locksmiths, don’t bother to lock their doors when leaving home. One of the most common excuses for failing to take proper security measures is that they were just going out for a “minute.” Unfortunately, a “minute” is often all it takes for a motivated burglar to enter your home, clear out your jewelry, have a sandwich and hit the road.
Don’t take chances with the safety of your family and valuables, make sure to always lock your doors and windows.
